Sasha skater dress: Sewing Instructions
Sasha is designed to be made using (jersey) knit fabric and has no closures - just pull it on over your head.
Construction
If your pattern includes pockets, start by combining the front outside (2a & 2b) and pocket pieces (6). To do so, take a pocket part (6) and its corresponding lower front outside part (2b), and sew them together at the pocket edge. (This is the upper edge of the lower front outside part.) Now take the corresponding upper front outside part (2a) and sew along the edge of the pocket bag. Flip things right-side-out. Insert your hand into the pocket bag and check the size of the opening. If it is larger than you would like, mark where the opening should end. (Close the side that’s closest to the princess seam, unless you’re sure you prefer it the other way.) Fold up the lower front outside part so that it’s right side faces the right side of the upper front outside and sew part of the pocket opening closed, following the seam between lower front outside and pocket bag. (On the upper front outside, this seam is marked with a dotted line.) Depending on the curvature of your pocket opening, you may want to baste before sewing.
Instructions for sewing everything together to be added later; for now, check Noble’s instructions. Remember to use a zigzag, stretch stitch or (for hems/neck opening) a double needle.
For the neck opening, bias tape provides a nice finish.
Bias tape visible on the outside
If you want the bias tape to show, cut off the seam allowance at the neck opening and attach the bias tape in the usual way.
Hidden bias tape
If you don’t want the tape to show, use it instead of a facing. Align one fold of the bias tape with the neck seam, with right sides together and the edge of the bias tape on the seam allowance side. Sew along the neck seam, then fold the bias tape inward until it no longer shows on the outside. Make sure the other edge of the bias tape is folded in and sew it down, keeping a constant distance from the neck edge.
